The cost of a solar system in Queensland varies depending on the system size, panel brand, and whether you include battery storage. A standard 6.6kW residential system typically ranges from $4,500 to $7,500 after the federal government rebate (STCs). Larger 10kW systems range from $7,000 to $11,000, and premium systems with battery storage can cost between $12,000 and $20,000. At Smart Solar Group, we offer $0 upfront options with interest-free payment plans, so you can start saving immediately without any out-of-pocket expense. We always provide a transparent, itemised quote with no hidden fees.
Most Queensland households save between 50% and 90% on their electricity bills after installing solar. The exact savings depend on your system size, energy usage patterns, and whether you have battery storage. North Queensland is one of the best regions in Australia for solar production due to high sun exposure year-round. On average, our customers save $1,500 to $2,500 per year. Some families with larger systems and battery storage have virtually eliminated their power bills entirely. During your free assessment, we'll calculate your projected savings based on your actual usage data.
A typical residential solar installation takes just 1 to 2 days to complete. The full process from your initial consultation to system switch-on usually takes 1 to 3 weeks, depending on council approvals and grid connection timelines in your area. At Smart Solar Group, we handle everything — from the initial design and paperwork to the installation and final inspection. Our goal is to get your system generating power as quickly as possible so you can start saving sooner.
Queensland residents can access the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which provides Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) that significantly reduce the upfront cost of your solar system. For a typical 6.6kW system, this rebate can be worth $2,500 to $3,500. The rebate amount is based on your location, system size, and the current STC price. Queensland also offers interest-free loans through specific programs for eligible households. Additionally, if you're on a concession card, you may qualify for further state-level assistance. Our team handles all the rebate paperwork for you at no extra charge.
Battery storage is increasingly worthwhile for Queensland homeowners, especially as electricity prices continue to rise and feed-in tariff rates decrease. A battery allows you to store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it at night or during peak tariff periods, maximising your self-consumption and savings. Batteries also provide backup power during storms and grid outages — a real advantage in North Queensland's cyclone season. Popular options like the Tesla Powerwall or BYD batteries typically cost between $8,000 and $15,000 installed. We can assess whether a battery makes financial sense for your specific situation during your free consultation.
Solar panels require very little maintenance. In Queensland, rain typically does a good job of keeping panels clean. However, we recommend a visual inspection every 6 to 12 months to check for dirt, debris, bird droppings, or shade from overgrown trees. If panels do need cleaning, a gentle hose-down with water is usually sufficient — avoid high-pressure washers or abrasive materials. Your inverter should be checked periodically to ensure it's functioning correctly, and most modern systems include monitoring apps that alert you to any performance issues. Smart Solar Group offers aftercare support and can arrange professional cleaning or maintenance if needed.
At Smart Solar Group, we only install tier-1 panels and quality inverters that come with comprehensive manufacturer warranties. Our solar panels carry a 25-year performance warranty, guaranteeing at least 80% output after 25 years, plus a 12-year product warranty. Inverters typically carry a 10 to 15-year warranty depending on the brand. Battery storage systems come with their own warranty, usually 10 years. On top of manufacturer warranties, our installation workmanship is fully guaranteed and covered by our CEC accreditation. We stand behind every system we install.
When your solar system is installed, it's connected to the electricity grid through your existing meter (which may need to be upgraded to a smart meter). During the day, your solar panels generate electricity that powers your home first. Any excess power is automatically exported back to the grid, and you receive a credit on your bill called a feed-in tariff. At night or when your solar production is low, you draw electricity from the grid as normal. The entire process is automatic — you don't need to do anything. Smart Solar Group handles all the grid connection paperwork and liaises with your electricity retailer and Ergon Energy / Energy Queensland on your behalf.
Feed-in tariff (FiT) rates in Queensland vary by electricity retailer and plan. As of 2025-2026, standard FiT rates typically range from 5c to 12c per kWh for energy exported to the grid. Some retailers offer higher time-of-use feed-in rates during peak demand periods. While feed-in tariffs have decreased from the generous rates of the past, solar still offers excellent value because the primary savings come from self-consumption — using your solar power directly instead of buying from the grid at 25-35c per kWh. We help you choose the best electricity plan to maximise your total savings, not just your feed-in payments.
Smart Solar Group offers several financing options to make solar accessible for every household. Our most popular option is the $0 upfront plan, where you pay nothing upfront and make affordable repayments that are typically less than your current electricity bill — meaning you save from day one. We also offer interest-free payment plans over 12 to 24 months for customers who prefer shorter terms. If you'd rather pay in full, we offer competitive cash prices. We can also assist with green personal loans through partner lenders. During your free assessment, we'll walk through all the options and help you find the best fit for your budget.
Most roofs in Queensland are suitable for solar panels. The ideal setup is a north-facing roof with a 15 to 30-degree pitch and minimal shading, but modern panel technology means east and west-facing roofs can also perform very well. Tin (Colorbond), tile, and concrete roofs are all suitable for solar installation. Factors we assess include roof condition, available space, shading from trees or neighbouring buildings, and structural integrity. If your roof needs repairs before installation, we'll let you know upfront. During your free assessment, we use satellite imagery and on-site evaluation to determine the optimal panel layout for maximum energy production.
The right system size depends on your household's electricity usage, budget, and goals. As a general guide: a 6.6kW system suits average households using 20-30kWh per day, a 10kW system is ideal for larger families or homes with pools and air conditioning, and 13kW+ systems are great for high-usage homes or small businesses. In North Queensland, a 6.6kW system typically produces 25-30kWh per day thanks to our excellent sun exposure. We always design systems based on your actual electricity bills and usage patterns to ensure you get the best return on investment. Our free assessment includes a custom system recommendation.
Standard grid-connected solar systems without a battery will automatically shut off during a blackout for safety reasons — this is required by Australian Standards to protect line workers repairing the grid. However, if you have a solar system with battery storage and a hybrid inverter, you can continue to power essential circuits in your home during a blackout. This is especially valuable in North Queensland, where cyclones and severe storms can cause extended power outages. We offer several battery and backup solutions that can keep your lights, fridge, and essential appliances running when the grid goes down.
All solar systems we install at Smart Solar Group come with monitoring capability. Most modern inverters include built-in Wi-Fi and a companion smartphone app that lets you track your solar production, energy consumption, and savings in real time. You can see how much power your panels are generating, how much you're exporting to the grid, and how much you're consuming — all from your phone. If your system includes a battery, you can also monitor charge levels and backup status. Monitoring helps you optimise your energy usage and quickly identify if anything isn't performing as expected. Our team can also remotely monitor your system and proactively alert you to any issues.
CEC Accreditation means that Smart Solar Group is accredited by the Clean Energy Council — Australia's peak body for the clean energy industry. This accreditation ensures that our installers are fully qualified, our designs meet Australian Standards, and our installations are eligible for government rebates (STCs). To maintain CEC accreditation, installers must complete ongoing professional development and adhere to strict quality and safety standards. Choosing a CEC-accredited installer like Smart Solar Group gives you peace of mind that your system will be installed safely, correctly, and to the highest industry standards. It's also a requirement to access the federal solar rebate.
Yes, solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy and rainy days, though at a reduced output compared to direct sunlight. On an overcast day, panels typically produce 10-25% of their rated capacity. The good news is that North Queensland enjoys some of the highest solar irradiance in Australia, with an average of 5-6 peak sun hours per day year-round. Even during the wet season, you'll still generate significant power. Over a full year, your system will produce far more energy during the sunny dry season to offset any reduction during cloudier months. Our system designs account for seasonal variations to ensure accurate savings projections.
